Is Stable Minds only for children and/or neurodivergent?
Our sessions are open to all ages. Whilst we discuss children a lot, equine assisted coaching can benefit anyone. We operate with open minds and zero judgement. Everyone is welcome at Stable Minds.
How does equine-assisted coaching help neurodivergent children?
Horses give immediate, non-judgmental feedback. They respond to body language, energy, and emotion rather than words, which can be really helpful for children who process the world differently. We use that to build self-awareness, confidence, and regulation skills in a very experiential way.
It means we don’t see you and/or your child as something to fix. We adapt the environment and approach to suit you/them, rather than expecting individuals to fit a narrow norm. We build on strengths, respect differences, and support skills in ways that feel safe and meaningful.
Are you focusing on therapy or coaching?
Our work sits in a coaching model, not clinical therapy. That means we focus on growth, skills, and self-understanding in the present. If therapeutic needs come up, we’ll always be transparent and can work alongside or refer to appropriate professionals.
How will you tailor sessions to me and/or my child?
We start by observing and getting to know how you and/or your child communicates, regulates, and engages. Sessions are flexible—some want structure, others need more space. We follow your/their cues and adjust pacing, activities, and expectations accordingly.
What if a child doesn’t want to engage with the horse?
That’s completely okay. Engagement is always optional. Some children start by just being near the horse, watching, or even staying outside the arena. Building a sense of safety comes first—connection with the horse develops naturally over time.
How do you handle meltdowns or shutdowns in children?
We see those as forms of communication, not misbehaviour. Our focus is on reducing demand, ensuring safety, and helping a child regulate in a way that works for them—whether that’s space, movement, quiet, or support. There’s no punishment or pressure to “push through.”
Are the horses trained for this work?
Our horse is carefully selected for temperament and experience. He’s used to working calmly around children and is supported to ensure his wellbeing too—because a regulated horse is key to a safe session.
Is there riding involved?
Most of our work is ground-based. That allows us to focus on connection, communication, and emotional awareness without the added complexity of riding. If riding is ever included, it’s only when appropriate and with full discussion.
How do you ensure safety?
Safety is built into everything—clear boundaries around the horses, close supervision, and teaching children how to interact respectfully. We also adjust sessions based on your child’s awareness, confidence, and sensory needs. We are fully insured and have clear emergency procedures in place which you will be briefed on prior to joining us.
What training and experience do you have?
Our coach is trained in equine-assisted coaching, neurodiversity coaching and has specific experience working with neurodiversity in children and adults. Professional development is ongoing to keep our practice safe and up to date. Certificates can be presented if requested.
How will we know if this is helping?
Progress often shows up in small but meaningful ways—like increased confidence, more regulation, or willingness to try new things. We’ll share observations regularly, and we can reflect together on changes you’re noticing at home too.
Do you set goals?
Yes, but they’re flexible and collaborative. Goals and plans will be fully transparent and open for discussion. Regular updates and check-ins are part of our practice and allow us to shift and update our goals for you and/or your child.
How long does it take to see progress?
It really varies. Some people show/see shifts quite quickly, especially in comfort and confidence. Deeper changes take time and we always follow you and/or your child’s pace.
Can parents stay and watch?
That depends on what works best for your child. Some feel more relaxed with a parent nearby, others engage more independently. We can try both and see what supports them most.
Will you give us things to try at home?
If it feels helpful, yes—but we keep it realistic and low-pressure. Often the biggest impact comes from the experience itself rather than homework.
What does a typical session look like?
There’s usually a gentle structure—arrival and settling, time with the horse, and a calm close. Within that, activities are flexible and guided by you and/or your child’s needs and responses that day.
What if I don’t/my child doesn’t connect with you?
That’s important to get right. We usually suggest an initial trial period so we can see how it feels. If it’s not the right fit, we’ll be honest and help you think about other options.
How do you build trust?
By going at your and/or your child’s pace, being predictable, and respecting communication—whether that’s verbal or not. Trust isn’t rushed; it’s something we earn over time.
Will I and/or my child be accepted here?
Yes—fully. You and/or your child doesn’t need to perform, behave a certain way, or meet expectations to belong here. Our role is to create a space where they can show up as they are and feel safe doing so.
